I liked this book quite a lot. As a beginner it showed me both hand carving and mallet techniques…which I was not expecting. Also a wide variety of knives and gouges are shown, so you get an understanding of when to use which type.

My husband and I currently have 5 children; each of them being born approximately one year apart. We plan on continuing this pace of childbirth until I am unable to bear any more children. We live on a ranch that extremely isolated: we haven’t had visitors since we moved into the place six years ago. Over the course of the first year of our marriage, my husband and I came up with a grand plan for raising our children with the end goal being that they take care of us in our old age on the ranch they were born on.On our ranch we raise cattle, sheep, and ostrich. We are also in the process of cultivating a large amount of farmland so that we can have fresh produce to eat. The farmland is situated near a pine tree forest, and there is plenty of hunting to be had. Now, back to our theory of how to raise our children so that they will take care of us in our old age. We are building them a separate wood carving books home near our own so that we can live apart from them. I plan on homeschooling them after they are done with the work that needs to be done around the ranch/farm. In this way we are utilizing their labor so that we might have a self-sustained existence. As my daughter Brendis will be the oldest (currently 5), emphasis will be given in her education to child care. The boys will all be taught how to ranch and farm (perhaps forming two separate teams as we have more children). The girls will focus on cooking meals for everyone in the family, making and mending clothing, and caring for their siblings. The girls will also help out on the ranch/farm when needed. Our isolation allows us the control of influences that the children will have. I will not be teaching them how to read or write. Artistic expression will be only in the form of quilting (for the girls) and wood-carving/carpentry (for the boys). I will not allow any books in the house besides the Bible, which I plan on reading at the beginning of family council meetings later in life. My husband and I will be the only people with internet access (we can only get satellite here). The computer will be locked behind two hidden doors with fingerprint readers. If they find the fingerprint reader and try to use it, an alarm will go off and they will be severely punished.Eventually, as life progresses and our numbers grow, we will be a self-sufficient family without the need to go anywhere. As the number of children grows, we will have the older boys begin construction on a larger complex to allow for more children.I believe that if we are successful in isolating the children from the outside world, we will be able to reach our end goal of having them take care of us in old age. I know that this kind of practice may lead to incest amongst the children, but by the time there are any repercussions my husband and I will be dead.
